Yankees could soon give up on player whose ‘future looks tenuous’

The New York Yankees have stuck by one of their former top prospects for long enough, but they are reaching a tipping point when it comes to his future. Oswald Peraza was once a top 100 prospect, but has not lived up to expectations.

Peraza has played in 122 career games now, but has failed to produce much for the Yankees. He has a .197 career batting average, and FanSided’s Stephen Parello suggested his “future looks tenuous” and his time as a Yankee could be coming to an end. Peraza is out of options and is not even showing value as a bench bat.

Peraza’s biggest asset is his versatility defensively. However, the Yankees have younger replacement options for Peraza ready to break through in the big leagues. Parello suggested Jorbit Vivas could get another go in the big leagues, but also tabbed Jesús Rodríguez as an option to replace Peraza on the roster.

Rodríguez is the Yankees’ No. 30 prospect and can play catcher, third base and in the outfield. Vivas and Rodríguez both have minor league options available, making them more valuable to the Yankees than Peraza at the moment.

Peraza showed great potential as a prospect. He was the organization’s No. 2 prospect in 2022. He was the No. 60 prospect in all of baseball. As a minor leaguer, Peraza had a .268/.347/.421 with 72 home runs. He has been part of the Yankees organization since 2017.

“Maybe some other team can revive the potential that made him MLB.com’s 52nd-best prospect back in 2023, but after some serious failings on the club’s part in developing him, he’ll surely never reach any semblance of his potential in the Bronx,” wrote Parello.
