Real Madrid star considers exit after managerial snub

In Xabi Alonso’s first match in charge at the FIFA Club World Cup for the Real Madrid, one name that stayed glued to the bench despite being fit, eager, and fully warmed up was Dani Ceballos.

The Spaniard, who trained under Alonso from the very first day of his appointment on June 9, didn’t play a single minute in Los Blancos’ 1-1 draw with Al Hilal on June 18.

He was the only fit first-team player who didn’t feature and that decision has now raised serious questions about his future at the club.

28-year-old had expected minutes in this match, especially after the team lacked fluency in initial part of the match, and many expected Alonso to call on Ceballos, known for injecting rhythm and control when games stall.

Yet, Alonso turned to Arda Guler and Luka Modric instead, despite Modric’s looming summer exit.

This isn’t the first time Ceballos has felt like the odd man out. Under Carlo Ancelotti, the midfielder had forced his way into the Italian’s plans, even when the coach was initially reluctant to use him. Now, he finds himself back in limbo.

“I hope we can talk soon to find out what the manager wants from me,” Ceballos said before the match. “From there, decide what’s best for everyone.”

Ceballos may seek a way out

According to SPORT, there is a growing belief inside the dressing room that Alonso does not see Ceballos in his long-term plans.

The manager is already pushing for a new midfielder, and that push adds weight to the current exclusion.

Ceballos’ former club, Real Betis, remains keen on a reunion. But the biggest hurdle? Madrid’s €20 million [$23m] price tag is twice his actual market value.

In any case, Ceballos is now open to a move, should a club meet Madrid’s demands.
