Cubs free agent idea adds $79 million slugger to replace Kyle Tucker

This past offseason, the Chicago Cubs made a significant trade when they acquired Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker.

Tucker has been one of the best players in Major League Baseball this season, recording a batting average of .279, 13 home runs, and 43 RBI in 73 games.

The only issue is that Tucker will be a free agent at the end of the season, and there is a good chance he won’t return to Chicago.

If Tucker isn’t on the Cubs next season, the team could look to pivot to other options. One name that could return to Chicago is Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, and Oliver Vandervoort from Fansided thinks the Cubs should go after Schwarber this offseason if Tucker doesn’t return.

“Schwarber is of course, one of the members of the Cubs “core” that was seemingly setting up the team for a dynasty run. However, that core was dismantled just a few years after they won the World Series. The slugger was the first of the group to be allowed to move on, and there have always been Cubs fans who felt that was a mistake,” Vandervoot wrote. “In recent years, the former first-rounder has established himself as one of the game’s premier power hitters, averaging 43 homers a season since the start of 2022. He’s on pace to blow past 40 long balls again this year, already with 22 homers while playing a key role for the Phillies’ offense. Kyle Tucker should be Plan A for the Chicago Cubs this season and offseason. If that plan falls through and the Phillies do let Kyle Schwarber walk, he would be a very enticing Plan B ahead of the 2026 campaign.”

Schwarber is in the final season of his four-year, $79 million contract, and his return to the Cubs would make losing Tucker feel better, as Schwarber is a fan favorite with many great seasons still ahead of him.
