Chargers predicted to make move to acquire $97.5 million cornerback in reactionary move

The Los Angeles Chargers may be relying too much on younger talent in their secondary heading into the 2025 season, leaving the team open for the possibility of acquiring a veteran. The team had been connected to former Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, but he was signed by the Baltimore Ravens this week.

However, could that move lead to the Ravens making a huge trade involving one of their other defensive backs? Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports seems to think so.

Palacios suggests that with the addition of Alexander and having Nate Wiggins on the roster, former first-round pick Marlon Humphrey could be expendable. While it would be shocking to see this happen as Humphrey made the Pro Bowl last year, anything is possible in the NFL.

If the Ravens are interested in dealing Humphrey, Palacios feels the Chargers, a team that has signed many former Ravens players since Jim Harbaugh became the head coach, as a team that could acquire him.

“However, the Los Angeles Chargers need another cornerback since they will look dramatically different this upcoming season. Despite signing Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste this offseason, 2024 draft pick Cam Hart has big shoes to fill. The Ravens would never trade their long-time veteran to a rival, but it’s hard to ignore the fit he has in Los Angeles”, wrote Palacios.

There is little doubt that Humphrey would be a massive addition to the Chargers’ secondary. The four-time Pro Bowler has over 400 career tackles and 19 interceptions. He has been one of the best corners in all of football since joining the Ravens.

In all likelihood, the Ravens weren’t looking to replace anyone when they signed Alexander but rather to further bolster their defense. His close relationship with star quarterback Lamar Jackson was likely a big factor in his landing in Baltimore.

But the idea of the Ravens trading Humphrey as a result of signing Alexander, while not completely impossible, seems quite unlikely.
