WBC Boxing Grand Prix – The Format
The WBC Boxing Grand Prix, the first world boxing championship in history, is in its second phase, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This tournament was created by the President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaimán, in conjunction with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, Councilor of the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia.
This tournament has five phases spread throughout the year, beginning the first phase in April, the second and current phase in June, continuing through August, October, and the grand finale in December.
The Grand Prix features boxers from four different weight divisions: featherweight, super-lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. Each division currently features 16 boxers from 28 countries. Each division will have two reserve boxers in case of injury or other issues.
In the first phase, 128 boxers from 39 different countries participated. As this was a single-elimination tournament, half of the participants were eliminated from the tournament.
The winners of the tournament will receive a cash prize, a mandatory fight for the WBC Silver title in their respective weight divisions, and the José Sulaimán Trophy.
Phase 2
This second phase of the WBC Boxing Grand Prix will be held over two days.
On Friday, June 20, boxers from the super-lightweight and middleweight divisions will participate.
On Saturday, June 21, boxers from the featherweight and heavyweight divisions will participate.

The WBC approved a 2-pound weight tolerance for featherweight and super-lightweight fighters and a 2.5-pound tolerance for middleweight due to fluid retention. This was a result of the long journey most fighters had to make to reach Arabian territory and the limited time they had to adjust.
