When are Newcastle facing Sunderland in the 2025/26 Premier League season?

The fixtures for the 2025/26 Premier League season have been announced.

Following the pattern of all EPL seasons, three teams are promoted from the EFL Championship to the Premier League, with Sunderland, Leeds United, and Burnley the fresh faces for 2025/26.

Sunderland are back competing in the to-flight for the first time since 2016/17, and to add to the excitement for fans, so is the Tyne-Wear derby.

The Tyne-Wear derby, also known as the North East derby, is a local inter-city rivalry between Sunderland and Newcastle United. The derby clash last took place in the third round of the 2023/24 FA Cup.

Newcastle vs. Sunderland head-to-head record

With the announcement of the 2025-26 Premier League fixtures, the Tyne-Wear derby is one of the most eagerly-anticipated matches on the schedule.

Sunderland earned their promotion to the EPL after eight years by defeating Sheffield United in the Championship playoff final in May. Newcastle, meanwhile, secured a spot in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League by ensuring a fifth-place finish in the Premier League in the last campaign.

The Magpies also ended their 56-year trophy drought last season by lifting the EFL Cup after defeating Manchester City in the final.

Sunderland are set to face Newcastle on December 13, at the Stadium of Light in Gameweek 16.

Newcastle will host Sunderland at St. James’ Park, on March 21, 2026, in Gameweek 31.

Newcastle and Sunderland have met each other on 152 occasions, with the Magpies having a slightly better historical record.

Newcastle have bagged 54 wins in the Tyne-Wear derby, with Sunderland winning 50. The remaining 48 matches have ended in a draw.
