The Ring Magazine continues to host boxing events in unique locations in New York. First, it was Times Square. Now, some of boxing’s youngest and brightest stars compete at Louis Armstrong Stadium on July 12.
The main event in the tennis stadium will be Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz. The co-main event will see Shakur Stevenson defend the WBC lightweight title against William Zepeda.
A bronze (2013) and gold (2015) medalist in the U.S. Youth National Championships. Berlanga (23-1) faced a massive step-up in competition when he lost against Canelo Alvarez last September. He entered free agency with a rebound win against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz.
Sheeraz (21-0-1) was a three-time finalist at the National Junior Championships. After holding Commonwealth and European gold, the 26-year-old fought Carlos Adames to a controversial draw for the WBC middleweight title.
A confident Berlanga believes in himself and aims for a knockout win on fight night.

“He’s a basic fighter. I’ve been boxing since I was six years old. What he brings, I’ve already seen,” Berlanga said. “He’s trained by Andy Lee, I messed up the last fighter, and now I’ll mess up this fighter.”
A multi-division champion, Stevenson (23-0) beat Edwin De Los Santos for the WBC title. Known for scientific performances that have resulted in both fans and critics, the 27-year-old took out replacement opponent Josh Padley in February after Floyd Schofield had to back out.
Zepeda (33-0) had wins against Joseph Diaz and Maxi Hughes before beating Tevin Farmer in November for interim gold despite getting dropped in the fight. In a rematch in March, Zepeda earned a majority decision win.
In what could be the toughest fight of his career, Stevenson is ready to prove he deserves to be named as one of the greats in the sport.
“I’m coming there to put on a performance. I’m not focused on standing there and fighting, I’m not focused on boxing, I’m coming in there to put on the best performance of my career. On July 12, Zepeda is going to remember my name,” Stevenson said.
