The Denver Broncos have concluded their mandatory minicamp and plenty of good things came from that, most notably the growth of second-year quarterback Bo Nix on full display.
But for one wide receiver, his absence from those practices has hurt his chances of making the team. A.T. Perry was not available for OTAs and more troubling than that is the news that the injury could linger into training camp.
That’s troubling for a player who will need all the reps that he can get.
Perry was a sixth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2023 but when he was waived last October, the Broncos swooped in and signed him before stashing him on the practice squad. With an athletic, 6-foot-5-inch frame, there were thoughts that Perry could steal a roster spot this summer.
Those thoughts are quickly dissipating.
The Broncos drafted Pat Bryant in the third round this year and looking at the depth chart, the team already has Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele. Those five players are going to make the team, and free-agent signing Trent Sherfield should be kept as a sixth wide receiver for his ability to play special teams.
That could easily leave Perry to fight for a spot on the practice squad, but missing any time in training camp, especially an entire week, puts him at a big disadvantage.
The Broncos also have undrafted wide receivers Courtney Jackson, Jerjuan Newton, Joaquin Davis and Kyrese White eager to compete for spots on the roster and practice squad as well.
Perry has been hyped for a player with just 12 career receptions. He’s got the kind of size that Payton loves, but it’s hard to see there being room on this roster for him. It will be impossible for him to make the team if he’s not out on the practice field.
