U.S. Open champ J.J. Spaun reveals Father’s Day reason he was up at 3 a.m. before final round

On what turned out to be the biggest day of his golf career, J.J. Spaun was up at 3 a.m.

His daughter Violet was sick, and the Spaun parents had to help.

“Today I was running to CVS in downtown because my daughter had a stomach bug and was vomiting all night long,” Spaun told reporters Sunday night. “I was just like, okay, my wife was up at 3:00 a.m., and she’s like, Violet is vomiting all over. She can’t keep anything down. It was kind of a rough start to the morning. I’m not blaming that on my start, but it kind of fit the mold of what was going on, the chaos. I don’t think I had any — I didn’t really — like when I go back home after the round, my kids are there, and it’s such a big distraction where I’m not even having to dwell on anything or think too much, which is a good thing.”

Spaun then started his U.S. Open final round with four bogeys in the first five holes and a 40 on the front-9.

But then he dominated the back, birdied the final two holes and won the U.S. Open title.

Quite the day for the father of two on Father’s Day.

Spaun will probably sleep well in the aftermath of all this.

But that’s the life of a dad, caring for kids and then making it to work on time. Spaun’s profession just put him on television in front of millions.

And with everyone watching, Violet’s dad delivered.
