PSG vs. Atletico Madrid live score: Club World Cup result, updates, stats as Vitinha doubles lead

Two weeks on from their record-breaking UEFA Champions League final win over Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain are back in action at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are in the opposition corner and typically revel in taking football’s big shots down a peg or two. They now have PSG in their sights.

Luis Enrique’s side hammered Inter Milan 5-0 at the Allianz Arena 15 days ago, the biggest ever margin of victory in a Champions League final.

Atleti will hope to provide a more robust challenge, just as Simeone’s teams did against Luis Enrique’s Barcelona in the middle of the previous decade.

82 mins: OH MY WORD, ALEXANDER SORLOTH, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?!?! Correa spears a low ball across the face of the PSG goal. Sorloth scored a hat-trick in his previous La Liga outing. He’s the man you want on the spot… he blazes over from about three yards. Simeone is on his knees. How has Sorloth not scored?

80 mins: Ibrahim Mbaye on for Doue, who’s had a mixed outing. But he’s rarely anything other than box office.

77 mins: RED CARD! CLEMENT LENGLET SENT OFF!

Lenglet agreed it should have been a foul and led Atletico’s protests. Unfortunately, that means the French defender has talked himself into a second booking.

76 mins: Oh dear, Jan Oblak, Mayulu intercepts his clearance and Hakimi really should score but can’t find the finish. That probably should have been given as a foul by Mayulu on Oblak.

72 mins: We emerge from the second-half cooling break with Sorloth on for Barrios. Atletico now essentially with a four-pronged attack as Correa and Alvarez flank Griezmann and the big Norwegian. Kvaratskhelia and the opening goalscorer Ruiz come off for PSG, with Lee and Zaire-Emery into the fray.

65 mins: Champions League final goalscorer Mayulu comes on for Ramos.

64 mins: Now Reinildo gets booked for clipping Doue. This is absurd. Your turn now, Conor.

63 mins; Haha, Correa looks to raid down the right wing straight away. Mendes closes the door and the substitute kicks out to get a booking. Tremendous antics.

62 mins: Marquinhos with the latest “too hot to sprint after you, pal” yellow card as he clumps Simeone up in the air. It’s Simeone’s last involvement as his dad makes a triple change. Correa, Gallagher and Reinildo come on for Simeone, De Paul and Galan.

60 mins: NO GOAL! FOUL BY KOKE! PSG STILL LEAD 2-0! Replays show that Koke did trip Doue. It’s very frustrating for Atleti and a lucky escape for PSG because Doue had plaed himself into some real strife and would probably have lost the ball anyway.

58 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! Julian Alvarez!!!!

Oh, now then! Alvarez darts into the PSG box and arrows a smart finish across Donnarumma into the bottom corner. Doue was culpable there, dribbling into trouble. We’re having a VAR check for a foul from Koke…

49 mins: Fabulous save from Oblak! That was almost the game. PSG scythe forward once more, Kvaratskhelia cuts inside and fires for the top corner. Oblak produces an unbelievable piece of goalkeeping to turn the shot against the crossbar.

2nd Half: Kickoff

Off we go again as Atleti mimic PSG’s hoof to the corner from kickoff. Koke is on for Lino.

Atletico might have been banking on a PSG Champions League hangover but they’ve been subjected to a wonderfully smooth and effective performance from Luis Enrique’s side, who’ve kept up their trademark pressing and verve despite the oppressive temperatures. Vitinha’s goal in th first-half stoppage time means it’s a long way back for Diego Simeone’s men

45+1 mins: GOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Vitinha!!!!!!

PSG race straight up the other end and Vitinha, romping forward from midfield, thumps past Oblak. A brilliant counter-attacking goal from the best team on the planet right now.

45+1 mins: Atletico with their best chance of the game! It looked like the chance might have got as Griezmann got in Alvarez’s way but the Atleti skipper then fired off a snap shot that Donnarumma got behind.

45 mins: Doue to the byline and he cuts the ball back to Ramos. The striker’s left-footed effort underlines the fact that he is very much right-footed.

44 mins: Marquinhos gets across to get in a timely challenge on Griezmann. Before Alvarez can get to the loose ball the offside flag goes up against his strike partner.

40 mins: Gorgeous footwork down the right from Doue but, once again, the final ball isn’t really there for PSG.

35 mins: The game had been played at a good pace but it’s been a bit stilted since the resumption.

30 mins: It’s time for a well-earned cooling break.

25 mins: That very much is a clear foul as Ruiz looks to break clear and Le Normand decides he can’t be bothered running after him in this weather and makes a blatant trip. The Atletic defender gets a yellow card. Ruiz gives his Spain teammate a glare that screams: “What the hell are you doing, pal?”

24 mins: Ohhhhh, interesting… Simeone looks like he’s got the better of PSG’s high line and goes to ground in a tangle with Mendes. The referee waves play on, the ball goes out and VAR spots nothing untoward. Looking at the replays, it’s a fair decision. If Mendes had committed a clear foul, he’d probably have been walking.

23 mins: Doue shuffles into some space but scuffs his shot. Atleti having to ride out a storm and avoid further damage.

19 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Fabian Ruiz!!!!!!

They certainly are cranking it up. The ball is worked to Ruiz on the edge of the box and the Spain international fizzes an unerring strike into the bottom corner left footed.

17 mins: Ramos tries a shot from just outside the box that he doesn’t get hold of at all. But PSG win the ball back high up in trademark style. Doue’s cross is partly intercepted by Lenglet before Kvaratskhelia forces Oblak into a low saw. The European champions are cranking it up.

12 mins: Neves looks to pop a cute little pass through to Ramos inside the Atletico box. It’s a little overhit. De Paul looked like he turned his ankle challenging Doue in the build-up to that and has just got back to his feet.

9 mins: Nuno Mendes and Llorente have a bit of a coming together and Atletico’s main mischief makers take that as a cue to get involved in some nonsense. De Paul is in the referee’s ear. Mr Kovacs manages to calm things down quickly enough.

4 mins: Hakimi gets away with one of his trademark raids down the right. The PSG full-back overhits his cross, though. When the ball comes back in from the left, Ramos can’t divert his header goalwards. Lively start to this one in the scoring Californian heat.

3 mins: Ohhhhhh that’s not far away! Alvarez curls just wide of the right post. Donnarumma was scrambling a little.

2 mins: Alvarez drives Atletico forward and PSG struggle to clear Simeone’s cross. The Argentina forward picks up the pieces and wins a free-kick about 25 yards out. He’ll fancy this himself.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Some loud mouth on the public address system counts down from 10 for us to commence. PSG kick off and it’s called back. That’s quite funny.

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams. Quite slowly. The players are coming out one-by-one. Are we going to make kickoff? It’s not the Olympic 100m, lads. 

20 mins before kickoff: For fans of unseemly nonsense, Bayern beat Auckland 10-0. Jamal Musiala scored a second-half hat-trick. Yikes.

40 mins before kickoff: Ramos’ inclusion is an interesting one, with Bradley Barcola’s absence probably forcing Luis Enrique’s hand. PSG were irresistible as they played with a false nine during the closing months of their successful European campaign. Portugal international Ramos might relish the physical battle Atletico are likely to lay down but it’s also fair to say Clement Lenglet and Robin Le Normand will probably be happier to face a more traditional No. 9 who should be easier to pin down.

1 hour before kickoff: Goncalo Ramos gets the nod at centre-forward for PSG in Ousmane Dembele’s injury absence. Otherwise, it’s the familiar team that romped through the business end of the Champions League.

1 hr 10 mins before kickoff: Time to get you up to speed with the team news. Julian Alvarez starts for Atletico despite playing both of Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers last week. Marcos Llorente will have to try to repel the ravenous PSG attack from right-back.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: We’re expecting a closely contested affair here (yes, I know we said that about PSG’s previous game) but there’s nothing of the sort going on in Ohio. Jamal Musiala has just scored his second of the game from the penalty spot to put Bayern Munich 8-0 (EIGHT-NIL) up against tournament outsiders Auckland City. Vincent Kompany’s team already have the record victory margin in Club World Cup history pretty much sewn up. Feels like it’s been a really solid use of everyone’s time.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Paris Saint-Germain vs. Atletico Madrid at the Club World Cup. You can certainly make a case for this Group B encounter being the pick of all the round-robin games. A clash of styles with two giants of the European game in the dugouts.

PSG vs. Atletico Madrid lineups, team news

Star forward Ousmane Dembele withdrew from the France squad last week after sustaining a knock in their UEFA Nations League semifinal defeat to Spain. 

Bradley Barcola suffered his own complaint during that camp and is also absent from the matchday squad.

In their absence, Portugal striker Goncalo Ramos starts, perhaps a player well-suited to the robust proposition of Atletico. But Luis Enrique has had so much success of late playing without a fixed centre-forward over recent months.

If the PSG boss wants to revert to that gamit than Kang-in Lee might feature from the bench.

Simeone appears to have a clean bill of health but must run the rule over his Argentina internationals. Nahuel Molina, Rodrigo De Paul and Julian Alvarez each started both of La Albiceleste’s recent World Cup qualifiers. Only Molina rests among the substitutes as Marcos Llorente gets the nod at right-back.

Javi Galan starts at left-back, a position Simeone seems set on bolstering amid reports linking the capital club to Liverpool mainstay Andy Robertson.

Atletico captain Koke, now 33, is a survivor from the teams that jousted with Luis Enrique’s Barca in the middle of the last decade, and starts on the bench.
