There ain’t nothing Elly De La Cruz can’t do on a baseball field.
Yeah, the Cincinnati Reds super-duper star is the kind of guy who inspires double- and triple-negatives.
You’ll understand once you see what he did in Detroit on Saturday in the span of one inning.
We’ll pick it up in the bottom of the third, when the Tigers looked to have a run-scoring extra-base hit on their hands.
Javier Baez was racing from first to score on a ball hit into the spacious gap at Comerica Park. No problem, right?
Except that the relay man was Elly. And Elly unleashed a 98 mile per hour throw to home plate to gun down Baez.

They say that guys who make epic defensive plays often get the chance to match it with the bat almost immediately.
And there De La Cruz was, digging in to hit in the top of the fourth.
110 miles per hour off the bat later, De La Cruz had his third consecutive game with a home run. It’s already the 16th contact in play Elly has had this season of 110 miles per hour or greater.

Before the game, Reds manager Terry Francona spoke about De La Cruz’s never-ending potential. He said he actually believes there’s more Elly can do than he has already done.
It’s probably true. De La Cruz has the talent to be the best baseball player in the world.
And well, in the span of just a few batters in Detroit on Saturday, he showed it all off.
