The Cleveland Guardians received some good news on starting pitcher Shane Biebers recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Bieber was shut down for a week after he experienced discomfort following a rehab start on May 31. He was then told by doctors that the feeling was normal, and not caused by structural damage. Further testing done in Dallas confirmed that sentiment.
“He got a good update; it was just a little soreness, a little setback,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said, who also mentioned that Bieber will resume his throwing program sometime within the next few days.
Bieber has been on the shelf since April 2024 with the injury. The two-time AL All-Star, and 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner has been bitten hard by the injury bug in the last couple of seasons, appearing in just 21 games in 2023 due to elbow issues and soreness throughout the season, which were exacerbated in 2024 after appearing in just two games.
The Guardians are in the midst of an inconsistent season so far in 2025, currently sitting in third-place in the AL Central at 35-33, 9.5 games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers. Additionally, they have dropped seven of their last 10 games and are currently 0.5 games out of the AL’s third Wild Card spot.
If the Guardians wish to make a run back to the postseason, getting Bieber back healthy to join Tanner Bibee, and Gavin Williams atop the rotation could help the team find its footing this season.
