3-time Pro Bowler isn’t considered ‘realistic’ option to upgrade Bears’ defense

The Chicago Bears have been one of the stories of the offseason, with the team hiring offensive-minded head coach Ben Johnson.

Chicago’s offense should be one of the best in the NFL this season, but the defense could use some help.

The Bears have to find a way to get after the opposing quarterback a little bit more this upcoming season.

Chicago should be looking to add another pass rusher before the season starts. One defensive end on the open market might not want to call Chicago home.

Veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith has been a free agent for the last three months and has yet to find a home, but Luis C. Medina from Bleacher Nation doesn’t think it’s “realistic” that Smith will join the team.

“Za’Darius Smith has played for three of the four NFC North teams. And even though I like to joke about Smith completing the cycle by signing with the Bears to bolster their defensive line, I don’t think it is realistic,” Medina wrote. “Plus, it sounds like he wants to run it back with the Lions.”

Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, has spent 10 years in the NFL, recording 69 sacks in 140 games.

The Bears should attempt to make a run at Smith to see if they can sign him, and if he doesn’t want to head to Chicago, then the team can pivot to a new option.
