Carlo Ancelotti gives his verdict on Neymar’s role in Brazil squad ahead of World Cup 2026

Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear — if Neymar is fit, he will be central to Brazil’s World Cup plans.

The former Real Madrid boss, now a Brazil head coach, didn’t hold back when asked about the forward’s role in the team moving forward.

Neymar has had a rough few years with injuries. Since returning to Santos, he has played only a handful of matches. His recent career has felt more like a medical report than a highlight reel.

But Ancelotti isn’t writing him off just yet.

The Italian coach met with Neymar before Brazil’s recent win over Paraguay and was full of praise for the 33-year-old. “We hugged at the hotel,” Ancelotti said. “When he is well, he can play anywhere on the field.”

That’s a strong vote of confidence — and also a little reminder that the ball is in Neymar’s court… or ankle.

What Ancelotti said about Neymar’s role in Brazil squad?

Ancelotti added, “Today he could do the same job as Cunha, as a number 10. In that position, he can be very dangerous.”

He went on to explain that Brazil’s system doesn’t depend on formations but rather on effort and balance.

“It’s not a problem to play with four, three or two forwards. It’s about having 10 players who run, who sacrifice themselves,” he said. “Rodrygo has done this many times, we know him very well. Neymar can also do this without any problem.”

The timing couldn’t be more crucial. Neymar’s contract at Santos is nearing its end, and there’s still no news of a renewal. His father recently said they hope he stays at the club, but no decision has been made.

If Neymar wants one last dance on the biggest stage, he’ll need to stay fit — and sharp. Brazil will need him firing, not limping.
