Arsenal offload winger termed as a transfer scandal after three years of association

Arsenal have had a busy summer transfer window. Although the Gunners haven’t signed any players just yet, they have been linked with many players. They will hope to rope in a few of them as the North London club are heading towards a decisive season for manager Mikel Arteta.

Apart from signing players, the Gunners are also keen on offloading some of their players to free up some funds. Therefore, they have sold Brazilian winger Marquinhos back to Cruzeiro permanently for £2.5 million.

The 22-year-old joined the Premier League outfit in 2022 from Sao Paulo for a nominal €3 million transfer fee. The Gunners took advantage of the youngster’s contract coming to an end.

He was so highly rated in Brazil that when he signed for Arsenal, former players and pundits were calling the move an absolute steal. Some of them felt his transfer fee was worth way more than Arsenal paid for him back then.

TV host and football expert in Brazil, Thiago Asmar, labelled the move as a ‘scandal’ as he felt Marquinhos to be worth at least around €10-15 million and couldn’t wrap his head around the nominal fee that Arsenal paid to Sao Paulo.

However, he never really kicked off at Emirates and has left the club after making only six appearances across competitions and scoring a solitary goal in the Europa League. The Brazilian never showed anything that would force Arteta to start him over the other players available at his disposal.

Where did Marquinhos go out on loan?

Marquinhos was sent out on loan for the majority of his three years in association with the North London outfit. He was loaned to Norwich City in the Championship in the January window of the 2023/24 campaign. He made as many as 11 appearances for the Canaries and scored a solitary goal.

Later, in the following summer, he was loaned out to Ligue 1 outfit Nantes. However, he played only seven games for the French club and was recalled by Arsenal in January.

In February 2024, Marquinhos returned to his native Brazil as he joined Fluminense on loan for a whole year. He then switched to Cruzeiro in January 2025 for a year-long loan deal.

Eventually, he has made the move permanent as Arsenal are keen to offload their surplus players this summer, mostly to free up funds to facilitate new signings. The Gunners are keen on signing a left-winger and are linked with several players.
