Former Spurs’ NBA champion becomes GM of surprising college basketball team

The world of college basketball is changing by the month. As a result, general managers are becoming more and more common in the league. Former NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski is the GM at St. Bonaventure, his alma mater.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is also the assistant GM at Davidson, his alma mater. Now, another current NBA player and former NBA champion is becoming a GM.

This time it is Los Angeles Clippers guard Patty Mills, who is set to be the GM at Hawaii.

” University of Hawai’i men’s basketball coach Eran Ganot is proud to announce that Patty Mills, an Indigenous Australian, five-time Olympian, NBA champion, and 16-year NBA veteran will join the Rainbow Warrior basketball program as General Manager. In this newly created role, Mills will support student-athlete mentorship and development, while contributing to key areas including recruiting, fundraising, and community engagement,” per the official release.

Mills was a part of the San Antonio Spurs in 2014 when they won the NBA title, and he has played for numerous teams. Mills played college basketball at St. Mary’s, but he is a current resident of Hawaii as he and his wife live in O’ahu’s North Shore.

Mills released a statement about the decision: “I’m deeply honored to join the University of Hawai’i basketball program as the new General Manager.” Mills said. “This role is not only a professional milestone, but a personal one as well. Despite being from different parts of the Pacific region, as someone from the Torres Strait Islands, I feel a strong cultural connection to Hawai’i—our communities share deep respect and spiritual connection to the land, sea and sky and the strength of family and tradition.”

Mills is from Australia and played for Team Australia in the 2024 Olympics, but he now has a new role with the Rainbow Warriors.
