Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd coach reportedly could be traded to the Knicks

The Knicks are still searching for their next head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau.

Several candidates have been mentioned, but Jason Kidd seems to be a name that could be a possible strong suitor for the job.

The one issue is he’s the current Mavericks coach, meaning we could see something very rare happen in the NBA.

Could Jason Kidd really be traded to the Knicks?

On Monday, ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported an update on the Jason Kidd/Knicks current relationship.

There seems to be interest between the pair on both sides, but the Mavericks organization could be the barrier between Kidd and the Knicks.

Kidd has been with the Mavericks since the 2021-22 NBA season.

He still has a couple of years left on his contract extension from last summer.

Windhorst reported several situations that can come out of this mutual interest, including one where a trade negotiation is worked out between the Knicks and Mavs.

Head coaches being traded in the NBA is extremely rare and has only happened a couple of times in the past couple of decades.

The Celtics traded Doc Rivers to the Clippers about a decade ago for a first-round pick in return.

In the late 2000s, the Heat traded away Stan Van Gundy to the Magic for a couple of future second-round picks.

It’s a unique situation, especially since Kidd could be leaving behind a franchise with a lot of upside, including the expected addition of Cooper Flagg in the NBA Draft.
