Yankees-Dodgers ‘win-win’ trade idea dumps $37 million starter to LA

The New York Yankees have a trade chip coming off the injured list soon, and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ long list of injuries could make them suitors for him.

The Dodgers recently placed Tony Gonsolin on the injured list. He joined Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Rōki Sasaki on the list of injured starting pitchers on the Dodgers. Yankees starter Marcus Stroman is working his way off the injured list, and Aaron Boone told reporters they are building him up as a starter. AthlonSports’ Jake Elman suggested the Dodgers trade for him.

The Yankees tried trading Stroman in the offseason, but ended up needing him after injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil. However, he has struggled since signing his two-year, $37 million deal with the Yankees. He had a 4.31 ERA last season and did not pitch in October. This year, he had an 11.57 ERA before getting put on the injured list.

“Although Stroman may not be the pitcher he once was, the Dodgers need whatever help they can get,” wrote Elman.

Stroman may not be guaranteed a spot in the Dodgers’ rotation. The team has relied on Max Fried, Carlos Rodón and Ryan Yarbrough. Will Warren and Clarke Schmidt have not been great, but Stroman may have shown the Yankees enough not to give him another shot. However, a team like the Dodgers could give him a fresh start and try to fix him.

“Fans can say whatever they want about the divisive Stroman, but he averaged 152 innings from 2021-24, and he’d likely be ecstatic at a guaranteed starting spot. Stroman should also come cheap, in part because he’s a pending free agent,” wrote Elman. “This theoretical trade gives the Dodgers a much-needed veteran arm, and it frees the Yankees of a player who clearly isn’t a fit for pinstripes. At least on paper, it’s hard to call that trade pitch anything but a win-win.”
