Red Sox drop brutal Alex Bregman injury update as team’s struggles continue

The Boston Red Sox have been without Alex Bregman since he sustained a quad strain. He is working his way back, but still has some hurdles to clear.

Bregman started his running progression on Thursday. While it is a step in the right direction, he is still “far away” from starting the baseball progression, according to Alex Cora.

“The progression is going well,” Cora told reporters. “Let’s see how he feels tomorrow and then we’ll go from there, and obviously we’re still far away from him starting the baseball progression.”

Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal in the offseason. He was slashing .299/.385/.553 in 51 games before his injury. At the time of his injury, the Red Sox feared it was “significant” and similar to the quad injury he sustained in 2021 with the Houston Astros. That injury kept him out for over two months.

Cora noted earlier in the week that Bregman’s progress compared to 2021 is encouraging. However, the star third baseman is still working through the injury.

“If it’s up to him, he’ll be playing tonight,” Cora said, according to Smith.

“He’s locked in,” Cora said. “He has his date on his mind. We just have to keep working. Obviously we don’t want to rush and we have to be very diligent with it. But he’s feeling great.”
