Portugal vs. Spain live score: UEFA Nations League final result, stats as Selecao win on penalties after Ronaldo equaliser

Portugal became the first country to win the UEFA Nations League twice after they came from behind in each half to draw 2-2 with Spain before dethroning their Iberian neighbours 5-3 on penalties.

Spain took a deserved lead midway through the first half with a well-worked goal. Mikel Oyazarbal’s deft flick released Martin Zubimendi to charge forward. The midfielder picked out Lamine Yamal and continued his run to scramble home when Portugal failed to clear the Barcelona winger’s cross.

Portugal swiftly levelled despite suspicions of offside against Cristiano Ronaldo in the build-up to Nuno Mendes lashing home a superb maiden international goal.

On the stroke of halftime, fine work from Pedri after Spain turned over possession preceded a cool finish from their Euro 2024 final hero Oyazarbal.

Luis de la Fuente’s side were good value for their lead but faded after the break and Cristiano Ronaldo’s master poaching skills were to the fore after the hour when he volleyed home a deflected cross from the excellent Mendes to net a 138th international goal.

Each side pressed for the winner but, just as in Spain’s triumph over Croatia in the 2023 final, the game went to spot-kicks.

Even though Ronaldo had been substituted, Portugal were perfect from the spot, with Ruben Neves making it five out of five to seal glory after Diogo Costa kept out Alvaro Morata’s tame effort.

9th penalty: Ruben Neves to win it for Portugal…NO MISTAKE, FIVE PERFECT PENALTIES! PORTUGAL ARE NATIONS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS. Ronaldo appears to be in tears, which feels a bit much. PORTUGAL 5-3 SPAIN

8th penalty: Morata…SAVED, Costa guesses correctly to his right and pushes away. PORTUGAL 4-3 SPAIN

7th penalty: Nuno Mendes, probably the best player on the pitch tonight.., probably the best penalty too. PORTUGAL 4-3 SPAIN

6th penalty: Isco, to the left. Costa gets a good hand on it but the power sees him through! PORTUGAL 3-3 SPAIN

5th penalty: Simon moving all over the place, but Bruno Fernandes doesn’t care. PORTUGAL 3-2 SPAIN

4th penalty: Spain substitution Baena with another high-quality kick, coolly sending Costa the wrong way. PORTUGAL 2-2 SPAIN

3rd penalty: Vitinha, with a slow-quick run-up. Simon guesses correctly but that’s right in the left corner. PORTUGAL 2-1 SPAIN

2nd penalty: Merino for Spain, thumped into the right corner as Costa guesses incorrectly. PORTUGAL 1-1 SPAIN.

1st penalty: Goncalo Ramos up first for Spain, crashed down the middle as Simon tumbles away. PORTUGAL 1-0 SPAIN

Fulltime

That’s it. If Spain are going to do it again, they’ll have to do it on penalties again. Portugal were knocked out of the Euros on penalties and have substituted Ronaldo.

120 mins+1: One added minute. All concerned seem to have accepted we’re going to penalties… but maybe not Diogo Jota, who heads just over!

111 mins: Alvaro Morata, not traditionally a friend of penalty shoot-outs, is on for Oyazarbal.

110 mins: Porro now emphatically takes one for the team, hacking down a rampaging Leao to get the most obvious yellow card imaginable.

108 mins: OH MY WORD, PEDRO PORRO ALMOST SCORES FROM HIS OWN HALF!!! The Tottenham full-back spots Costa out of his ground and lines one up. If goes just over with the Portugal goalkeeper scrambling backwards.

Kickoff: 2nd Half (ET)

Spain won the previous Nations League final on penalties. Are we going to have to go there again? Jota replaces Neto for Portugal, while Yeremy Pino comes on for a fairly flat Lamine Yamal.

Halftime (ET)

It’s been a loooong season. How much more you boys got? Especially those of you who have a week off before the Club World Cup starts.

105 mins: Lamine Yamal catches one sweetly but Costa sees it all the way once more.

104 mins: Neto volleys an incredible ball back into the box after the corner was partially cleared but the offside flag goes up.

102 mins: Leao goes rampaging into the Spain bix but Porro recovers well to get a challenge in. That’ll be a corner.

100 mins: The result of all that nonsense is a VAR check for a red card. Check complete. Baena and Ramos both did some pushing and shoving but nothing to be too upset about.

99 mins: The irrepressible Nuno Mendes bursts into the Spain box and takes a tumble. He wants a penalty and there’s some pushing and shoving afterwards.

98 mins: The ball breaks to Cucurella on the edge of the Portugal box but he can’t get hold of his left-footed strike.

93 mins: Double change for Spain, with Porro on for Mingueza at right back and Alex Baena replacing Williams.

92 mins: Good chance for Portugal as the full-backs combine. Mendes gets into the box and Semedo start towards the near post but stabs wide.

Kickoff: 1st Half (ET)

Off we go again then, no more changes as yet.

Fulltime

Two fine sides can’t be separated and we head into extra time. Portugal definitely grew in confidence after Ronaldo’s equaliser. Any victory in the additional period or on penalties will take place without their talisman, though, who has been substituted.

90+1 mins Fernandes blasts goalwards and Simon throws himself to his left to punch away.

90 mins: Leao gets his first chance to run and is agriculturally brought down by Le Normand. Free-kick just on the left of the penalty area for Portugal as we begin two minites of added time.

88 mins: Ronaldo makes way, handing the armband to Fernandes and some words of advice to his replacement Goncalo Ramos.

82 mins: Zubimendi drives forward and finds Isco. The veteran playmaker engineers some room and Costa pushes his strike out of the top corner. What a story that would have been.

76 mins: Lamine Yamal has been somewhat on the margins here. He winds up a shot cutting inside. It’s hit well but Costa is behind it.

74 mins: Double substitutions for either side. Veiga and Leao on for Inacio and Bernardo for Portugal, while Isco and Merino replace Pedri and Ruiz for Spain.

64 mins: Pedri bursts into the Portugal box looking to restore the lead in quick time. But there’s that man Mendes again to make the block! What a game the PSG star is having.

61 minsGOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Cristiano Ronaldo!!!!!

Who else? Well, lots of people in an elite game at this stage of his career, but Ronaldo shows his undimmed poaching instincts after the excellent Mendes scoots past Lamine Yamal and his cross deflects towards the goalmouth. Ronaldo is alert to the possibility, gets around the back of Cucurella and volleys home from close range.

56 mins: Le Normand puts in a pretty thundering ball-and-man challenge on Ronaldo. Play on! Spain move up the field and Costa makes a sharp save from Costa’s low drive.

48 mins: Fernandes lashes into the net but the offside flag is up and VAR confirms the decision. That spares Simon, whose positioning there was somewhat avant-garde.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We’re back underway. A double change for Portugal, with Semedo replacing Joao Neves and Ruben Neves on for Conceicao.

Halftime

The Portugal fans, who seem more the voluble in the Allianz Arena, boo the officials at the whistle but that’s been a very enjoyable half. Good teams, good goals, good game. See you in a short while.

45 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!! Mikel Oyarzabal!!!!

Pedri slots the pass to Oyarzabal and Spain’s Euro 2024 hero is coolly on target in a final again. Portugal want a foul on Bernardo during the build-up but there’s no joy for them there.

43 mins: Ronaldo comes all the way back to make a defensive challenge on Lamine Yamal. Ego is a powerful thing.

41 mins: Munguiza with a loose touch and then a cynical foul to prevent Bernardo from launching a counter-attack. All in all, the Celta Vigo man has done quite well to avoid a booking.

36 mins: Simon scrambling as a cross from the left loops just over his bar. This is Portugal’s best spell of the game.

26 minsGOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Nuno Mendes!!!!!
Mendes gets his first goal for Portugal, and what a goal. Suspicions of offside against Ronaldo in the build-up but, as is the modern way, it’s deemed to have happened too soon before the goal for the officials to bother. The move continues and PSG left-back Mendes lashes a glorioius finish, low and hard across a helpless Simon.

25 mins: Williams scooting through, away from Dias, but the Manchester City defender sticks to his task and wins the goal kick to boot. A vital intervention.

21 minsGOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! Marin Zubimendi!!!!!!

Wonderful move from Spain, who were just starting to get on top. Oyarzabal with a gorgeous flick to Zubimendi. He works the ball out to Lamine Yamal and continues this run to dispatch a close-range finish. Oyarzabala survives a VAR check for offside and the goal stands.

13 mins: Lamine Yamal wins a free-kick that he decides to take himself despite some, errrr, helpful advice from more senior pros. He blasts over and might not get the next one.

5 mins: Ohhhh, that’s a good chance for Portugal. Spain are disorganised defending a set-piece and the ball breaks to Neves, who blazes over.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Off we go. Nations League glory and Iberian pride on the line.

5 mins: Anthems time. You all know the words to Spain’s… because it hasn’t got any.

10 mins before kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel. They’ll be out for the anthem shortly. There are PSG players on both sides, back at the scene of their triumph from eight days ago.

30 mins before kickoff: Luis de la Fuente’s side aren’t the only Spaniards chasing glory this evening. Carlos Alcaraz is immersed in some historic mayhem in the French Open final. Have a look at what’s going on HERE.

1 hour before kickoff: The Joao Neves at right-back experiment continues for Portugal. Francisco Conceicao and Vitinha come in after their impressive turns from the bench in the comeback victory over Germany.

1hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in. Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza replaces Pedro Porro at right-back, while Fabian Ruiz returns to the starting XI at Mikel Merino’s expense.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff. Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Portugal vs. Spain in the UEFA Nations League final. That’s Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lamine Yamal, if you like generational superstar narratives.

Portugal vs. Spain lineups, team news

As impressive as Portugal’s comeback against Germany was, their upturn was also indicative of mistakes made by Roberto Martinez in his initial selection.

The experiment of fielding Joao Neves at right-back should be shelved after he made way for Nelson Semedo. Another Paris Saint-Germain star, Vitinha, replaced Ruben Neves at the base of the midfield and Francisco Conceicao came on for Trincao in attack.

That triple change arrived in the 58th minute with Portugal 1-0 down; by the 68th minute, they led 2-1. Vitinha and Conceicao each start.

Portugal predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Costa (GK) — Semedo, Dias, Inacio, Mendes  — Bernardo Silva, Vitinha, Fernandes — Conceicao, Ronaldo, Neto

Mikel Oyarzabal continues as Spain’s central attacker. The Real Sociedad captain was preferred to Alvaro Morata and laid on a pair of assists before halftime against France.

Fabian Ruiz only featured from the bench in midweek but returns to the starting XI, back at the stadium where he won the Champions League with PSG eight days ago. Despite scoring against France, Arsenal’s Mikel Merino makes way

Martin Zubimendi will continue at the base of the midfield. Rodri has not been risked for this international break after only recently returning from nine months on the sidelines with an ACL injury.

Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza replaces Pedro Porro at right-back.

Spain lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Simon (GK) — Mingueza, Le Normand, Huijsen, Cucurella — Pedri, Zubimendi, Ruiz — Lamine Yamal, Oyarzabal, Williams
