Dodgers-Yankees trade pitch sees New York cut ties with $37 million All-Star

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting pitching injury woes have become almost comical.

Now that Tony Gonsolin has gone on the shelf, the Dodgers have four pitchers who have started at least one game on the injured list. That doesn’t include Shohei Ohtani, Gavin Stone, Emmet Sheehan, or River Ryan, all of whom have missed the entire season so far.

Though they looked to have the deepest rotation of any team in Major League Baseball entering the year, Los Angeles now appears to be a top early trade candidate. And perhaps their World Series foes from a year ago could be a fit.

The Yankees are getting set to welcome back Marcus Stroman from the injured list themselves, but there’s not a clear spot for the veteran righty in the rotation. His two-year, $37 million contract has proved to be a bit of a bust for the Bronx Bombers so far.

On Sunday, Athlon’s Jake Elman proposed that the Dodgers could trade for Stroman in their effort to stock a healthy starting rotation, helping the Yankees clear salary for other deadline acquisitions.

“If the Yankees trade Stroman in the coming weeks, their first call should be to the Los Angeles Dodgers—assuming, of course, the Dodgers don’t send the initial message,” Elman wrote.

“Although Stroman may not be the pitcher he once was, the Dodgers need whatever help they can get. Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow are on the 60-day IL with shoulder injuries.”

The 34-year-old Stroman had an 11.57 ERA in three starts this season and has pitched to a 4.72 mark overall in a Yankees uniform. The Dodgers are known for getting the best out of their veteran acquisitions, but there’s not a ton of raw stuff to work with in Stroman’s arsenal.

Nothing would be a surprise, but the Dodgers have to think they can do better than Stroman on the market.
