Chargers trade pitch lands Lions $9.2 million starting defender to bolster defense

The Los Angeles Chargers are lacking solid depth in the cornerback room behind starters Donte Jackson, Cam Hart, and Tarheeb Still. Outside of Benjamin St-Juste, Los Angeles doesn’t have a backup corner with consistent starting experience, and that’s concerning for a playoff contender.

They also lost Kristian Fulton to the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency and have yet to re-sign Asante Samuel Jr. When healthy, both players were starters in the secondary.

The Chargers also waited until Round 7 of the draft to address cornerback, as they selected Trikweze Bridges out of Florida State with the No.256 overall pick. He likely can’t be relied upon for high-level depth in his rookie campaign.

Adding more depth and versatility to the position group must be a focus for the Chargers, and Last Word on Sports’ Anthony Palacios urges the team to trade for Detroit Lions cornerback Amik Robertson.

“With Kristian Fulton gone and Asante Samuel Jr. still unsigned, the team might be better off with Robertson to step in temporarily to give this team a chance to win close football games,” Palacios wrote.

Robertson’s long-term future with the Lions is uncertain, as the veteran has one year left on his deal and will be fighting for a starting spot at the nickel position in training camp with 2024 second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw Jr., who is set to return in 2025 after an injury-riddled rookie campaign last year.

If Detroit decides to move on from Robertson and hand the keys to Rakestraw to be the starting nickel, the Chargers would be a logical landing spot. Robertson could serve as a potential starter in Jim Harbaugh and Jesse Minter’s defense, and his versatility to play in the slot and on the boundary would be incredibly valuable.

Robertson is still working back from a broken arm that he suffered in the Lions playoff loss to the Washington Commanders last season. Once he is cleared to return, Los Angeles should see what it would take to land the scrappy defender who would fit Harbaugh’s culture perfectly.
