NBA legend DeMarcus Cousins weights in on Timberwolves Anthony Edwards rise to stardom

Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards undoubtedly has emerged as one of the best players in the NBA.

The 23-year-old has been sensational throughout his young career, leading the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive year.

His explosive play and charisma off the court have vaulted him to the forefront of the league conversation, a topic that many have debated throughout the 2024-25 season.

During an appearance on FanDuelTV Run It Back, former All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins broke down what it truly means to reach superstar status and why Edwards might already be there compared to other stars in the league, notably Nikola Jokić.

“It’s the on-court performance that’s important. Are you marketable? Can the league push you? Can the league sell you? Do the people like you? The global impact as well. You can’t be a superstar if you’re only known in the States,” Cousins said on Run It Back. “The league is bigger than that; it’s a global brand. Once you have that global impact, you get that superstar status… As great as Jokic is, you can’t sell him… You have guys like Anthony Edwards when everything he says is gold.”

It comes as no surprise that some may want to anoint Edwards as the face of the league. He is one of the most exciting and dynamic young players in the NBA. However, he has not earned the accolades and achievements many of his peers have earned.

Edwards himself has been vocal about not carrying the burden of being the face of the league, a mantle that stars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant have all embraced throughout their careers.

Edward was drafted No. 1 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves back in 2020. Since then, he has demonstrated consistent growth, evolving into a cornerstone of the franchise.

Still in a league that has players like Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Nikola Jokic, Edwards is carving out his legacy.
