It’s been a chaotic 24 hours for the Atlanta Braves, and that’s putting it mildly.
On Thursday afternoon, the Braves blew a 10-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks, dropping them to 27-34 on the season. After the game, they then called up nine-time All-Star Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A in a desperate attempt to solve their flailing bullpen.
Right-handed pitcher Scott Blewett, who allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings on Thursday, was designated for assignment as part of a significant roster shuffle to make way for Kimbrel. As it turned out, it would be his final outing in the Braves organization.
On Friday, the Braves traded Blewett to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations. The Braves officially announced the move on X (formerly Twitter).
Atlanta also recalled left-handed pitcher Dylan Dodd from Triple-A Gwinnett and placed right-handed pitcher Daysbel Hernandez, the team’s most reliable bullpen arm to this point in the season, on the 15-day injured list with forearm inflammation.
Blewett, 29, began the year on the Minnesota Twins, was claimed off waivers by the Orioles in April, and was then DFA’d and subsequently traded to the Braves for cash only five days later. Now, it’s as if the Orioles have pulled the UNO reverse card.

In 15 total appearances this year, Blewett has a 3.91 ERA in 25 1/3 innings. With the Braves, he put up a 5.51 mark in 16 1/3 innings, striking out 13 and walking 10.
Blewett is putting together an all-time journeyman season already, but he wasn’t able to help the Braves figure out their disastrous bullpen. Where Atlanta goes from here is anyone’s guess.
