Packers’ $84 million veteran floated in blockbuster trade to Falcons needing defensive help

The Green Bay Packers are dealing with internal issues this offseason, just like many other NFL teams. Contract disputes have become an annual expectation across the league, with players frequently sitting out until they secure a new deal or are traded. One such case in Green Bay involves star cornerback Jaire Alexander, who has been pushing for a new contract.

“On the contract front, the Packers could want a revised deal that allows Alexander — who has missed at least 10 games in three of the last four seasons — to earn his full salary if he’s healthy and available in 2025 but protects the team in case the injuries continue,” wrote Packers Wire’s Zach Kruse.

The situation has dragged on, with Alexander skipping voluntary workouts, OTAs, and possibly mandatory minicamp. Despite his absence, he remains in regular communication with the team.

“Alexander has not reported to the Packers’ voluntary workouts, which would raise red flags over his status with the team. While speculation has run wild, passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley sang a different tune, telling ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that he’s been in contact with Alexander every day while skipping the offseason workouts,” reported Dairyland Express’ Chris Schad.

If a new deal can’t be reached, the Packers may be forced to seek a trade partner for the former All-Pro corner. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin believes the Atlanta Falcons could be a realistic destination.

“All offseason, the Green Bay Packers have publicly anticipated a breakup with Alexander, who’s simultaneously been one of the NFL’s best — and most injured — cover men. Both sides hinted at a split in free agency, either via trade or release. Now the Packers apparently have a new contract offer on the table, but if the Pro Bowler doesn’t bite at a pay cut, Green Bay could save $17 million by cutting or trading the cornerback. Potential landing spots: Falcons,” Benjamin wrote.

The Falcons are a team that could benefit from adding a veteran presence opposite star corner AJ Terrell. If a deal happens, Alexander could be the missing piece Atlanta needs to return to the playoffs for the first time in several years.
