The Philadelphia 76ers are leaving no stone unturned as they try to bounce back from an awful season.
That includes working out a former No. 9 overall pick.
Dennis Smith Jr. took part in a two-day veteran minicamp with the 76ers on Thursday and Friday, according to beat reporter Keith Pompey.
Smith was once the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks out of North Carolina State.
In 326 career games at the NBA level, Smith has averaged 9.7 points and 4.2 assists per game.
Most recently, Smith played for Real Madrid in Spain.
In the NBA, he has played for the Mavs, Knicks, Pistons, Trail Blazers, Hornets and Nets.
He’s a phenomenal athlete and a good passer who can score going to the basket.
Smith’s only downfall is his 3-point shot, which he has made at just a 29.8% rate in his NBA career.
Considering the rust Smith will likely have to shake off, it’s an even bigger ask to hope he’ll improve his outside shot.
But if the 76ers decide to sign Smith, he’ll need to make that outside shot count a little more often to earn the playing time he’ll want to see to have everything work out the way he’s hoping.
There’s no deal at this point, but the chance for Smith to join a talented roster back in the NBA is a cool opportunity.
