Bold international call up blocks Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz plan

Liverpool remain laser focused on securing key transfer target Florian Wirtz.

Germany international Wirtz has reportedly indicated his desire to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer following Xabi Alonso’s return to Real Madrid.

Jeremie Frimpong has already completed a move to Arne Slot’s Premier League champions as the Dutch coach moved to immediately replace the departed Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool are expected to be offered an unopposed run at the 22-year-old after Bayern Munich stepped out of the transfer race in May with club officials convinced he preferred a switch Anfield.

Negotiations continue between Liverpool and Wirtz’s representatives with midfielder cheekily hinting at his excitement over a switch to Merseyside after Germany’s UEFA Nations League defeat to Portugal on June 4.

However, the final details of the transfer are not complete, with Liverpool looking to spread the cost of what could become an EPL record transfer.

Previous reports from German outlet Kicker claimed Leverkusen would request Reds star Harvey Elliott to be included in the agreement, but that plan now appears to be blocked.

Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool contract, salary, transfer fee

If Liverpool are to secure a deal for Wirtz, it will smash their current transfer record, which stands at the £72m [$98m] they paid Benfica for Darwin Nunez in 2022.

Leverkusen’s opening position set an asking price of  £100m [$135m] upfront with £25m [$34m] in performance-related add-ons across his contract.

Liverpool are also ready to offer Wirtz a ‘long-term’ deal which is rumoured to be for at least five years until 2030.

However, with Leverkusen confident Liverpool will remain at the negotiating table, the Bundesliga giants have rejected a €130m [$148m] offer as they hold out for €150m [$171m].

An option to add in Elliott to the deal could shave £25m [$35m] off the total price – with Jarell Quansah also linked with Erik ten Hag’s rebuild – at a value of £17m [$22m].

That scenario has now been placed on pause with Elliott and Quansah both included in Lee Carsley’s England U21 squad for the UEFA European Championships which start in Romania on June 11.

Both players will not be released to negotiate club deals – with England aiming to defend their title – and that could revert the Wirtz deal back to a straight cash purchase.
