Trade pitch has Mets acquiring All-Star closer to bolster their bullpen

The New York Mets are one of the best teams in Major League Baseball and will be aggressive ahead of the trade deadline.

The Mets will look to add more pitching help, especially in the bullpen, before the trade deadline. Ahead of the deadline, MLB analyst Matthew Sullivan of Heavy proposed a deal that would see the Mets acquire Felix Bautista from the Baltimore Orioles.

Orioles acquire:

The proposed deal would be an intriguing one, and one that Sullivan believes is a win-win for both teams.

“Sproat and Dohm are the 2nd and 18th-ranked Mets prospects,” Sullivan wrote. “Both prospects would be enough for the Orioles to move Bautista, as the Orioles are looking for pitching depth. After sending Sproat and Dohm, the Mets still have plenty of intriguing prospects in their system. But, most importantly, they acquire a top bullpen option in Bautista.”

Bautista has two more years of club control past this season, which is why the price tag is so high. Bautista was an All-Star in 2023 and could take over as the Mets’ closer or be a high-leverage reliever.

This season, Bautista is 0-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 21 games, including going 11-for-12 in saves.

The Mets would give up two of their top prospects, but it is a fair price to pay. Sproat has been hit hard in Triple-A this season as the right-hander is likely to reach the majors next season.

Dohm, meanwhile, is in High-A after and has pitched well this season, and at age 22, he could rise up the minor leagues quickly.
