Could Red Sox trade $38 million All-Star before deadline?

This season has not gone as people thought it would for the Boston Red Sox so far.

After trading for ace pitcher Garrett Crochet and signing Alex Bregman in the offseason, things were looking up for the Red Sox. We’re a little over 60 games into the season, and Boston is sitting below .500 with a 29-33 record. If the team continues to slide and lose, could they give up on the 2025 season and look ahead to 2026?

One player that could be on the trade block if the Red Sox become sellers at the trade deadline could be one-time All-Star right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito, as Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer listed Giolito No. 26 on his MLB Trade Deadline Big Board.

“This isn’t the same Lucas Giolito who was an All-Star and Cy Young Award contender between 2019 and 2021, most notably in the sense that he doesn’t throw as hard or miss as many bats,” Rymer wrote. “Yet he’s throwing strikes this year, and his changeup is back to bamboozling hitters to the tune of a .179 average. He’s at least an innings-eater, and it probably wouldn’t be hard to get Boston to eat some of his $19 million salary.”

Giolito is in his second year of a two-year, $38.5 million contract, according to Spotrac, and has a 2026 mutual option with the Red Sox. After missing the entire 2024 Major League Baseball season and the beginning of the 2025 season, the 30-year-old pitcher has appeared in six games for Boston this season and has a 4.78 ERA.

Giolito has not looked like the former All-Star he used to be, but he can still make an impact for a team making a playoff push. If Boston looks to sell at the trade deadline, trading Giolito could be a good move to cut salary and get young talent in return.
