Gleyber Torres is starring for the team with the best record in baseball.
New York Yankees fans sure wish that sentence was about them.
The Yankees are doing just fine, of course, leading the AL East. But it’s the Detroit Tigers, Torres’ new team, that have the top mark in MLB.
Torres has been a big part of it. He’s batting .272 with five home runs, 29 RBI and a .793 OPS.
The biggest reason for the Yankees regret stems from their infield struggles.
Jazz Chisholm just came back Tuesday night and homered, which was a key return.
But Torres has a better OPS than DJ LaMahieu, Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza, the injured Oswaldo Cabrera and all the other fill-ins the Yankees have tried, like Jorbit Vivas.
Torres is somehow still just 28 years old, so he could legitimately still hit like this for many years.

He’s not a good defender, and maybe that worried the Yankees, but they could certainly use his bat right now.
Defense sorts itself out, especially if a guy’s bat is special. Torres, even after a few bumps in the road, clearly still has a special bat.
It just isn’t carried by a guy in pinstripes anymore. Instead, Torres is letting MLB hear him roar.
