The New York Yankees have a lot of infield options, which is sometimes the case when none of the options are getting the job done.
It has been clear for a while now that the Yankees are one infielder short of their perfect roster. Every game, New York is hoping Oswald Peraza, DJ LeMahieu, or Jorbit Vivas will perform above the ceiling they’ve shown so far in 2025.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. will soon return from an oblique injury and he can play second base or third, so there’s flexibility there. But finding an upgrade at either spot still seems like a crucial tenet of the Yankees’ World Series pursuit.
Could New York take a swing at a former number-one overall prospect having a bit of a resurgence?
In a recent article, Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media suggested Los Angeles Angels infielder Yoan Moncada, who has been a primary third baseman this season, as a rental trade target for New York at the Jul. 31 deadline.
“Yoan Moncada, a switch-hitting infielder in a contract year, fits the mold of a cost-effective rental,” Wilson wrote. “He’s currently hitting .228/.333/.478 with five home runs and a strong 128 wRC+, showcasing legitimate offensive upside.

“He’s batting .260/.367/.545 as a lefty this season, which includes all five of his home runs and most of his production. In a league loaded with right-handed pitchers, that skill becomes a weapon in Yankee Stadium’s short right field porch.”
There was a time when Moncada looked like one of the brightest young stars in the majors. Unfortunately, that time was back in 2019, when the former Chicago White Sox slugger put up a .955 OPS and received Most Valuable Player votes.
Moncada is 30 now, and no one is mistaking him for a face of a franchise. But could he put together a strong second half and help a team with title aspirations further their goals? That’s Wilson’s thesis.
