The Chicago Cubs hired Craig Counsell as their manager before the 2024 season. However, his predecessor may be a candidate to become the Baltimore Orioles’ next manager.
The Orioles fired Brandon Hyde earlier this month as the team was 15-29 to start the year. The Orioles made the postseason last year, but 2025 is shaping up to be a lost season. The team has won just four games since firing Hyde, and the managerial search will be a big topic in the offseason.
While the season is far from over, MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed on MLB Network who some candidates for the Orioles manager job could be. Among them was former Cubs manager David Ross.
“David Ross, who did a good job in Chicago. They had a chance to get one of the best managers going, so I kind of get that,” said Heyman. “He was considered for the bench coach, and he withdrew because he’s going to get a managerial job. Here, he had the connection with Brandon Hyde, who got laid off, but I think the Baltimore people like him very much.”
Ross started managing the Cubs in 2020, after spending two seasons with the team at the end of his career. Ross hit a home run in the Game 7 of the Cubs’ 2016 World Series victory and etched his name in Cubs history forever. As a manager, he had a 262-284 record with the Cubs.

Ross has four years of big league experience as a manager and would be a fine candidate to replace Hyde. However, he does not really have the success to justify making him the top choice. He only led the Cubs to the postseason once, in 2020, and was swept in the National League Wild Card.
