Luis Enrique names PSG’s ‘game-changing’ clash which inspired UCL final spot

Paris Saint-Germain are set to face Inter Milan in the Champions League final on May 31 at Allianz Arena, Germany.

PSG bagged 10 wins and suffered five losses of 16 games in the competition so far. However, the French club’s journey to the Champions League final was not as smooth as their recent performances portray.

The Parisians were on the receiving end of victory in their first game of the competition. However, they slipped up in their next matches, facing defeat against Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, and Bayern Munich.

PSG were pitted against Man City in the seventh match of the competition and pulled off a comeback win after conceding two goals in the first 53 minutes. The match ended in a 4-2 victory for the Parisians.

Even though they had to go through an additional playoff round to secure a spot in the Round of 16, PSG really turned things around for themselves in the Champions League, with their victory over City in January.

And now, speaking ahead of their Champions League clash, PSG head coach Luis Enrique referred to their win against City as one of the ‘games that change everything.’

What did PSG boss Luis Enrique say?

Enrique spoke about how the clash against Man City in the early stages of the competition was a turning point for his squad and paved the way to the final.

“Some games change everything – be it for the fans or for the players themselves – and can twist a team’s fate. Against City, we were 2-0 down, but we’d scored a first-half goal that was ruled out for an extremely tight offside, and we never deserved to be behind, even though football isn’t about merit,” he said.

“Maybe that game was important for us as a squad; we’ve gradually improved and managed to reach our usual standards at certain key points in games. I think that the team has grown and reached an even higher level than what we were expecting. That’s why football is so incredible, why it stirs such emotions and why we’re now in the final,” concluded Enrique.

PSG and Inter Milan have been pitted against each other on only six occasions with the Italian side securing three wins as opposed to the Parisians’ solo victory.

It remains to be seen if Enrique will be able to lead PSG to their first-ever Champions League title on Saturday.
