The New York Yankees could be looking deeply into the third base market near the MLB trade deadline. They could strike a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies reportedly tried shopping Alec Bohm in the offseason, but ended up keeping him. He was an All-Star in 2024 for the first time in his career. Bohm is playing well and could be a great option for the Yankees at third base with Oswaldo Cabrera now likely done for the year. Heavy’s Sam Bernardi suggested the Yankees could land Bohm in a deal centered around Trent Grisham.
“Another potential option for New York is Philadelphia Phillies’ third baseman Alec Bohm,” wrote Bernardi. “As a pending free agent, Bohm is far more expendable. While the Phillies are also thinking about October, they could use another outfielder, and perhaps a Trent Grisham-centered deal would entice them.”
Bohm will be a free agent after next season, and Spotrac projects him to earn a seven-year, $142 million deal on the open market. The Phillies have already tried to move him while his value is high, and adding Grisham could help them as well.
The Phillies are near the bottom of the league when it comes to their OPS from center field. Grisham is a two-time Gold Glover and is hitting .255 with 12 home runs this year. The Yankees seemingly have more options in the outfield than they do at third base. The Phillies would be getting an experienced center fielder and prospects in exchange for a third baseman they may not want to pay down the line. However, a trade like this may be more of a dream than a potential reality.

“Should the Yankees stick with internal options, we will see either D.J. LeMahieu or Jazz Chisholm Jr. (once healthy) man the five,” wrote Bernardi. “This feels like the most Cashman thing to do, and as enticing as a trade may seem, this is probably the smartest approach.”
