The most prestigious club trophy in women’s football was awarded on Saturday, May 24 at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League final saw reigning champions Barcelona face Arsenal, who last won this trophy back in 2006-07, a year after the Gunners lost to Barca in the men’s final.
It was the Gunners who emerged triumphant this time, Stina Blackstenius coming off the bench to score the only goal of the game and spark jubilation among the travelling English fans. In the process, Barca were denied a three-peat in this competition.
The Spanish side met Lyon in the final for the second time in three seasons a year ago. The French giants won 3-1 back in 2022 to deny the Catalans a second straight trophy, although they returned a year later to reclaim the prize, defeating Wolfsburg 3-2 in the Netherlands. In 2024, Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas gave Barca a 2-0 win at San Mames to seal an historic quadruple of titles.
Barca and Lyon have been two of the dominant forces in European women’s football over the past 15 years and the match lived up to the billing in front of a record crowd of just over 50,000 spectators. But which team has the greatest level of success in this tournament’s history?
The Sporting News looks at the teams to have won this competition the most, and the players who have celebrated with the trophy more than any others.
