Arne Slot responds to Mikel Arteta’s dig on Liverpool’s Premier League title win

Back in April, head coach Arne Slot led Liverpool to claim the Premier League title in his debut season with the Reds with 82 points in the league table.

Liverpool have pulled off a great run in the Premier League this season with 25 wins and only four losses in 37 games. While the Reds’ form in the league in the ongoing campaign has been hailed as impressive by most, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta shared a different opinion.

Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League consecutively in the last two seasons, and are most likely to extend it to a third by the end of this campaign. On both occasions, the Gunners ended up as runners-up with more points than the current champions.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s elimination from the Champions League semifinal by PSG, Arteta summed up Liverpool’s success in the Premier League as ‘being in the right moment, in the right place.’

“Winning trophies is about being in the right moment, in the right place. Liverpool have won the title with less points than we have in the last two seasons. With the points of the last two seasons, we would have two Premier League titles,” he said.

“You have to be in the right moment, in the right place. Hopefully we are in the right moment, in the right place in Paris, to earn the right to be in the final,” added Arteta.

Now, Slot has shared his thoughts on Arteta’s comments, mentioning that one can ‘can never win a league with only having a lot of luck.’

What did Arne Slot say about Mikel Arteta’s comments?

When asked by reporters to opine on Arteta’s comments, Slot mentioned (comments via BBC Sport) that he agrees with the Spanish manager but it applies to the other competitions as well. He also claimed that one can win a final with luck in their favor but not a league.

“I totally agree with him on that. Only not in a Premier League season. So in a Champions League, FA Cup, World Cups, then it is about ‘in the right time in the right place’. In a season that’s so long, then normally the best team wins the league,” he said.

“You can reach a final with good luck, and you can never win a league with only having a lot of luck. Maybe we were a bit lucky that City had – for the first time in five years – a difficult period.”

“But we were also part of that difficult period, because we beat them at home [when] they had already lost a few… and we didn’t have one, and that’s what you need when you want to win a league like this. You cannot have a longer period of games where you drop points,” concluded Slot.

Slot & Co. are set to face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in their last Premier League clash of the season, on May 25, at Anfield.
