Cardinals trade idea sends $8.2 million All-Star closer to Dodgers

The St. Louis Cardinals have seemingly turned their season around after starting the year 14-19. Since then, they have won 13 of their last 17 games.

Now, they are only three games back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.

However, that hasn’t stopped speculation that they might sell some at the trade deadline. One the biggest pieces they can trade is closer Ryan Helsley.

Garrett Kerman of Clutch Points proposed the idea of St. Louis sending him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“Given the demand for elite relievers and Helsley’s stature, the Cardinals should target a contender with a glaring bullpen need and a willingness to pay for premium relief help. The Los Angeles Dodgers, perennially in the market for bullpen upgrades and with a deep farm system, fit this profile,” Kerman wrote.

Helsley set a franchise record with 49 saves in 2024 and is the reigning NL Reliever of the Year. He is in the final year of his contract and can bring back a haul in exchange.

Kerman’s proposal has Los Angeles sending pitchers Michael Grove and Nick Frasso to St. Louis along with outfielder Josue De Paula.

This year, Helsley is 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA in 16 appearances and has racked up nine saves. It would be wise for the Cardinals to trade him, even if they are in the race so that they can replenish their farm system.

Beyond pitching prospect Michael McGreevy, depth in the minors is currently thin, so it’s important to pick up pieces that can fill holes in case of an injury.

It will be interesting to see what St. Louis can get for Helsley this summer.
