Braves could cut ties with Ozzie Albies in shock trade for AL East star

It feels like there’ve been a few more rumblings this season involving Atlanta Braves star second baseman Ozzie Albies.

There have never really been any credible reports, but the rumor mill seems to like the idea of the Braves moving on from Albies.

The latest suggestion comes from Athlon Sports. They propose a trade of Albies to the Yankees for shortstop Anthony Volpe.

“Advanced statistics have favored Volpe since his 2023 debut, with him posting 8.2 bWAR over his first 364 games,” Athlon Sports writes. “However, the 24-year-old shortstop doesn’t always pass the eye test, with his .228 career average and .672 OPS often infuriating the Yankees’ loyal fanbase.

“The Yankees have stuck by Volpe throughout his struggles, from missed opportunities at the plate to inconsistent fielding. But if the Yankees ever considered moving in another direction, they’d be wise to call the Atlanta Braves about a potential Volpe-Ozzie Albies swap.”

This season, Albies has struggled to the tune of a .225 batting average.

The second baseman is still a value. He’s got two years remaining on his seven-year, $35 million contract.

Volpe is under team control through 2028.

It’s not a perfect match, because the Yankees wouldn’t have an obvious shortstop replacement. Maybe they’d move Jazz Chisholm back to short, which he hasn’t played since 2021.

The Braves could use the shortstop, having spent much of the season with journeyman Nick Allen at that position.

It would be cool to see two marquee MLB clubs make a big-league deal like this, but it seems unlikely at this point.
