Raiders injury updates from OTAs: Maxx Crosby, Christian Wilkins, Malcolm Koonce

The Las Vegas Raiders took part in their latest practice of OTAs on Wednesday, which was also open to the media.

On top of getting to see players in action in team drills, beat reporters on the ground were able to get some injury updates on key players, including edge rushers Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce, and defensive lineman Christian Wilkins.

We also got a positive update on left tackle Kolton Miller, who was present at the session, which indicates he isn’t holding out as he seeks a new contract. You can read more on that here.

Here are the latest injury updates on all three key Raiders defenders. Tashan Reed of The Athletic provided the news.

Maxx Crosby injury update

Crosby battled through an ankle injury last season and was clearly not himself before he underwent surgery that ended his season early. The good news is, Crosby is 100% healthy at the moment and is taking part in practice.

“I didn’t have an offseason,” Crosby said. “I’ve been here the whole time. It’s been five months of hardcore training and rehabbing every single day.

“Last year was definitely one of the hardest years of my life, in general,” he added. “I had so many things going on. I was battling injuries and not being able to be myself. … That was the first time in my career I felt like it was Week 2, and I was on a popped tire. I’m doing everything in my power to try to go out and help my teammates, and at times, I felt like I just wasn’t the same.”

“Being out there with my teammates and being able to fully be myself … it’s the best feeling on the planet.”

Christian Wilkins injury update

Wilkins is still rehabbing from the Jones fracture that ended his first season with the Raiders early. He has not been participating in practice but was able to take part in team stretches, per video from Wednesday’s practice.

As Reed notes, Wilkins was out of his boot at the end of last season, got back into it this offseason, and is now out of it again.

However, head coach Pete Carroll said Wilkins is still working through what has been a “difficult recovery” and is “in the midst of a long, challenging process here.”

“This has been a difficult recovery,” the Raiders head coach said. “(Wilkins has) done everything he needs to do. He’s been here every day. He’s here early working hard, but we’re still working on it. He’s not ready to get back out (there). We’re in the midst of a long, challenging process here. Fortunately, there’s a lot of time. … He’s been onboard the whole time, but it has been challenging.”

Wilkins’ timeline to be cleared for full activity remains unknown.

Malcolm Koonce injury update

Koonce remains on the comeback trail, also, as he’s still rehabbing from the torn ACL he suffered last season and is not taking part in practice at this point.

Koonce did say, however, that he “should be good soon.”

“It was difficult — physically, emotionally, mentally,” Koonce said. “I should be good soon.”

Thayer Munford injury update

Along with Koonce and Wilkins, Munford is also not taking part in practice, but his injury has not been revealed.
