Jason Kelce’s Tush Push role, explained: How former Eagles star helped keep infamous play alive

The Tush Push isn’t going anywhere.

On Wednesday, the Packers’ proposal to ban the play made famous by the Eagles failed, as it didn’t reach the required 24 votes necessary to pass. According to reports, 22 teams voted with the proposal, while 10 teams voted against the proposal to keep the play legal.

Philadelphia put on a full-court press to make sure the proposal didn’t pass, even getting Jason Kelce to speak with the owners about why the Tush Push deserves to stay. The former Eagles center helped perfect the play in Philadelphia and disagreed with the reasons behind why teams wanted the play banned.

Here’s what Kelce said during the meetings.

What did Jason Kelce say about the Tush Push?

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Kelce spoke with the group about the mechanics of the play, explaining why the Tush Push isn’t a safety risk. A big reason behind the proposal is the idea that the play is bad for player safety, so Kelce’s opinion on the matter may have played a part in changing votes.

On his podcast, Kelce went into detail about why he flew to Minneapolis, including shooting down the misconception that he retired because of the play.

Kelce and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie reportedly spoke for 45 minutes in defense of the play, while other owners spoke against the play. Lurie called the play “the safest play in the history of the game,” according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
