Liverpool are seriously considering making a bold move this summer. And by bold, we mean potentially breaking the Premier League transfer record.
The target? Bayer Leverkusen’s star playmaker, Florian Wirtz.
With Manchester City reportedly backing away from a deal, Liverpool see an opening. City had Wirtz lined up as a possible heir to Kevin De Bruyne. But the price tag made even the Etihad’s coffers wince.
Now, it’s Liverpool eyeing the German maestro — but they want more than just talent. They want commitment.
At 22, Wirtz is one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders. He’s just helped Leverkusen to a remarkable unbeaten domestic season.
He also posted 31 goal contributions in 45 games — talk about German engineering at its finest. But Liverpool won’t move unless they’re sure he actually wants to leave the Bundesliga, as per reports via Sky Sports.

Wirtz is still under contract with Leverkusen until 2027. And while Bayern Munich have reportedly agreed personal terms, nothing’s set in stone.
Liverpool’s interest is very real — but cautious. The club won’t trigger Leverkusen’s eye-watering £126 million asking price unless Wirtz signals his intent to leave Germany.
That figure would blow Liverpool’s current record fee — the £75 million paid for Virgil van Dijk — clean out of the water.
And while money talks, the Reds also need to think tactically. Wirtz operates best as a number 10, a role currently owned by Dominik Szoboszlai. So, how would manager Arne Slot fit both into his system?
Let’s not forget, Liverpool are already lining up a deal for right-back Jeremie Frimpong and scouting other areas. Splashing out on Wirtz could limit big moves elsewhere — especially for a striker.
Still, if the German playmaker gives Liverpool the green light, this could be the summer’s headline transfer. Or as Reds fans might put it — time to Wirtz some magic.
