Chargers’ reunion with former first-round pick predicted to be short-lived

The Los Angeles Chargers used free agency to bring back a former first-round pick this offseason, signing wide receiver Mike Williams to a one-year deal.

Williams, drafted by the Chargers with the No. 7 overall pick in 2017, spent last season with the New York Jets before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was largely ineffective for both teams. During the draft, the Chargers selected Tre Harris in the second round before using a fifth-round choice on KeAnfre Lambert-Smith. Could the addition of those two young wide receivers push Williams off the roster?

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report believes it could happen. While looking at each team in the league, Knox listed the best player who could be cut for each team. For the Chargers, that choice was Williams.

“The Los Angeles Chargers brought back wide receiver Mike Williams this offseason, though, that doesn’t mean they’ll keep the 30-year-old.

While Williams has over 5,100 receiving yards on his resume, head coach Jim Harbaugh was willing to part with him last offseason. Bringing him back did add depth, but L.A. has since drafted Tre Harris, Keandre Lambert-Smith, which could again make Williams expendable”, wrote Knox.

Williams does have familiarity with Justin Herbert, but he’s dealt with injuries in his career that have set him back. If he wants to make an impact for the team this season, he’ll have to be a lot better than he was last year. He had a total of 21 catches between the Jets and Steelers and had as many teammates throwing him under the bus as he did touchdown catches.

Williams is now 30 years old and his best days in the league are behind him. He will have a hold on a roster spot but he’s not a lock to make this team and if he can’t prove he can be more of a weapon than someone like Lambert-Smith, who was a fifth-round pick, Jim Harbaugh will move on from him in the same fashion that he did last year.
