The Boston Red Sox made a big splash in February when they signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract.
Bregman has performed well with Boston thus far, hitting .314/.392/.589 with 11 home runs, 33 RI and a .981 OPS. However, other issues have arisen,
Rafael Devers was unwilling to move off of third base, which was solved when Bregman moved to second, but there is more drama with Devers. Bregman eventually moved back to third base.
Nick Villano of FanSided listed this signing as one that Boston might regret.
“Devers did not want to leave his spot at third base. However, Bregman is a much better defensive player. Devers outright refused to play first base, and now he’s stuck as a designated hitter. Could this have been fixed with a simple conversation BEFORE the Red Sox signed Bregman?” said Villano.

Based on performance alone, there is no need for the Red Sox to regret the signing of Bregman. He is the better defensive third baseman and he has improved their lineup significantly.
However, the drama that has ensued has raised questions. Devers is now unhappy and it’s possible that soon, he could request a trade.
This is the last thing Boston needed to happen. Drama is plaguing the team.
Devers is also now unwilling to move to first base, and there might not have been any drama in the first place if the Red Sox had looked elsewhere for their offense.
Eventually, Boston may have to choose between Bregman and Devers, but the choice could be made for them, as Bregman can opt out after 2025.
