Newcastle United face a mounting injury crisis ahead of Sunday’s important Premier League clash against Arsenal, with Sven Botman emerging as the latest concern for head coach Eddie Howe.
Botman was withdrawn just 10 minutes into the second half during Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Chelsea, sparking fears of a recurrence of the knee troubles that have plagued his season.
“We hope so,” Howe said post-match when asked if Botman was okay. “He was icing a [knee] problem at half-time, so we hope he’s okay. so, tactically, I thought it would help us to change.”
“Lewy [Miley] came on and did really well in difficult circumstances,” Howe added. “There was a lot of pressure on him, and he handled it impressively.” But the question on Botman remains, the Dutch defender had started his first match in over three months on May 11.
He had previously spent 10 months recovering from an ACL tear suffered in March 2024, which required surgery.
The 25-year-old returned in January but then picked up a separate issue in his other knee, sidelining him until earlier this month.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle now have “huge concerns” that Botman will likely miss the remaining two fixtures, including the season-defining trip to the Emirates.
To compound the problems, vice-captain Kieran Trippier remains sidelined with a calf injury, while midfielder Joelinton is recovering from knee surgery.
Newcastle, currently third in the table with 66 points, need just one win to confirm Champions League qualification.
They face second-placed Arsenal away before finishing the season at home against Everton.
