Mets’ David Stearns teases trade as injuries continue to pile up

The New York Mets are off to a 28-16 start. They look to be contenders in the National League, but injuries are starting to take a toll on their roster.

The Mets will have the opportunity to add to their team near the trade deadline. They have lost some key players like A.J. Minter, Danny Young, Jesse Winker and Jose Siri. However, players like Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea have yet to make their debut. While it is not exactly clear where the Mets will try to improve, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has noted that the team will not hesitate to make a deal.

“In terms of external acquisitions, we’re always monitoring, but sometimes it takes a little bit deeper into the season to find the right fit, and I don’t see any specific glaring spot on the team right now that maybe we had last year at this time that we feel like we need to be extremely proactive about,” Stearsn told reporters. “But if there are areas where we feel like we can get better and players available, we’re certainly going to make a deal.”

The bullpen may be the biggest area of need for the Mets, but Maneas and Montas returning could indirectly help the bullpen. When those two guys return, two arms from the Mets’ current rotation will need to be moved in some capacity. David Peterson moving to the bullpen would add a lefty to the group, which they desperately need.

The Mets are seemingly still chasing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League. The Dodgers have shown that they will not hesitate to make big moves if it means bettering their odds at winning the World Series. The Mets will need to take a similar approach.

There should be some intriguing center fielders and relievers available at the deadline if those areas are identified as needs by Stearns. The trick will be finding players who can help the Mets win now, without costing them elite prospects.
