Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement ‘says yes’ to Liverpool switch from Bundesliga giants

Liverpool are looking to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold as a priority in the coming weeks.

The England international has opted to bring down the curtain on a two-decade association with the Reds as his contract expires on June 30.

Despite Liverpool’s offer of a renewal to their No.66, the 26-year-old has decided on a ‘new challenge’, and he is on course to join Real Madrid as a free agent.

Los Blancos are working on a deal to bring him to the club before they jet off to USA for the FIFA Club World Cup at the start of June.

The La Liga giants are hopeful of securing an agreement to terminate his link to Anfield to meet their flight deadline with Arne Slot’s side prepared to demand a sizeable early release fee.

Once the exit is finalised, Slot will fast-track his plan to bring in experience cover at right-back, with Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong highlighted as his No.1 pick.

Is Jeremie Frimpong joining Liverpool: Transfer fee, Leverkusen exit plan

There is a vacancy at right-back for Liverpool heading into the 2025/26 season, and despite Conor Bradley’s strong progress in 2025, Slot wants more options.

Frimpong played a vital role in Bayer Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title win under Xabi Alonso in 2024.

However, Alonso’s incoming departure to link up with Trent in Madrid could trigger a player exodus from the BayArena, starting with the Dutch international.

His attacking instincts have drawn comparisons to Trent but his defensive numbers provide a boost to an area where the latter has struggled.

As per data from Fbref, he is in this season’s Bundesliga Top 10 for progressive passes received (272) and progressive carries (100).

As speculation starts to solidify, reports from the Daily Mail indicate the player himself has indicated to Liverpool that he wants the move, and Slot is ready to activate his £29.5m [$40m] release clause.

Talks have already started, and with Liverpool not featuring in the Club World Cup, they have the flexibility to extend negotiations into June as needed.
