Phillies manager makes surprising comment on Jordan Romano’s recent outing

Everyone wants to have their best stuff at all times — especially high-level relievers.

Jordan Romano is used to feeling that way, with the righty finally returning to his dominant ways of late.

“It always feels good when you’re contributing to wins,” Romano said after striking out the side in the ninth inning in a recent 2-1 win. “I’m just kind of feeling more like myself out there, not pressing as much, just kind of being me.”

“Command is definitely getting a little better,” Romano said. “The slider shape [and] depth has been getting there, kind of where I want it to be. So yeah, just a combination of those two things kind of helping out right now.”

Romano said his slider command has been key for him of late, helping him get back to the dominance that he has shown to be capable of in the past.

“The slider, for me, is more feel,” Romano said. “It’s like finger placement, stuff like that. I’ve been working on trying to get a little more depth, a little more late break. It’s more just hand positioning than mechanics, I’d say.”

Romano has been spotless through his last six outings, with the closer starting to click into gear at a good time for a surging Phillies club.

Philadelphia lost relievers Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez in the offseason. The Phillies are 25-18, good for second place in a competitive NL East.
