Bundesliga star emerges as leading candidate to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Liverpool are in a joyous mood after securing their second Premier League crown and 20th English top-tier title this season under the leadership of Arne Slot.

Earlier this season, Slot revealed that the Reds won’t show a lot of activity in the summer transfer market but one expects them to bring in players where they lack a bit of depth.

They recently suffered a big blow as Trent Alexander-Arnold has decided to move on from Merseyside and join Real Madrid after his contract ran out with the club. The right-back is leaving the club after 20 years of association.

Therefore, they are allegedly looking to bring in someone who can replace the dynamic full-back and replicate his attributes. So transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggest Jeremie Frimpong as the leading candidate to fill up that void at Anfield.

Times’ Paul Joyce and The Guardian’s Andy Hunter also feel that the Bayer Leverkusen star is someone who may join Liverpool, considering his affordable release clause and he also suits the profile they need to strengthen the right flank.

Frimpong is reportedly keen to leave Leverkusen at the end of this season, and he would fancy a move to join the Premier League champions. Also, he has that Dutch connection with Slot, who may convince him to choose the Reds over any other club.

How would Frimpong fit in Slot’s system?

The Dutch full-back, who has been an integral part of Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, is known for his attacking instincts. He likes to venture up the field with tenacious overlapping runs on the right as a right-back or wing-back.

Frimpong has registered a staggering 44 assists and 29 goals for Leverkusen in his 189 outings across five seasons. He was sensational in the 2023/24 campaign, scoring as many as 14 goals from the wing-back position.

As per Bundesliga, the youngster has clocked 36.34 km/h with his tenacious sprints making him of the fastest players in the league. He has also registered as many 983 sprints in the competition, highlighting his speed and stamina.

Despite his attacking flair, Frimpong averages 0.93 tackles won and 3.27 ball recoveries and 3.91 duels won per game, showing his contribution on the defensive front as per Fotmob. He has netted four goals and provided five assists in 32 Bundesliga appearances this season.

Overall, he is a natural athlete and will provide great attacking flair, something that Slot also implements in his philosophy at Merseyside. Also his low release clause of £29.7m [€35m] makes him a viable option for the Reds.
