The Boston Red Sox are 20-19 as of May 8, just a couple of games behind the New York Yankees. In the offseason, the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a $120 million deal.
In turn, they put Bregman at third base and moved Rafael Devers to the designated hitter role in a highly scrutinized decision. Devers was not thrilled with moving into the full-time DH role, although he eventually came to peace with it enough to support the team.
Then, first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury, and rumors swirled that Devers would move to first base.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said “no” when asked about that, and now Devers had some strong words as he has seen his name involved in yet another potential positional switch.
“Rafael Devers says he’s not willing to play first base. Doesn’t understand why the team wants him to move again after asking him to change positions in spring training. He said things are fine in the clubhouse but he’s clearly frustrated with Breslow,” Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reported.

That’s not all, either.
Red Sox reporter Christopher Smith said that Craig Breslow approached Devers about the potential move, but the veteran had a strong response and told them to “hit the market” for a first baseman. Devers clearly is not thrilled with the idea one bit.
“It was the GM that I spoke with. I’m not sure what he has with me. He played ball and I would like to think he knows that changing positions like that isn’t easy,” Devers said. “Now I think they should do their job essentially and hit the market and look for another player (to play first base). I’m not sure why they want me to be in between the way they have me now.”
The comments just kept on coming from Devers.

If they do move Devers to first base, it might not go over well, so this will be something to monitor.
