Pittsburgh Riverhounds pull insane U.S. Open Cup upset of MLS-side NYCFC on last-gasp winning goal

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds pulled off the most epic win in the history of their football club on Wednesday night.

Playing in front of adoring home fans, the Riverhounds stunned MLS-side NYCFC in the U.S. Open Cup round of 32.

The game was scoreless for 95 minutes. But in the final minute of stoppage time, Beto Ydrach found his way onto a back-post header.

He crushed the headed shot back across the face of goal and into the right corner.

NYCFC technically got a couple kicks of the ball after this, but it was essentially a match-winner on the final touch.

Pittsburgh benefited from an NYCFC red card after the hour mark that reduced the team from a higher division down to 10 men.

The Riverhounds, who play in the second-tier USL, have been one of the consistently excellent squads at their level.

But in the U.S. Open Cup, the MLS teams are expected to win. They have more money, more resources, more acclaimed players.

But on Wednesday night, the Riverhounds had heart. They defended their hearts out, and when the moment called for it, they found a magical goal.

It’s a night that soccer fans in Pittsburgh won’t forget for a very long time.
